It is quite easy and also cheap to get to Tarifa. The main airports to Tarifa are Malaga and Jerez de la Fontera. Cheap airlines like Ryanair or EasyJet land there. Due to the high transfer costs it is always worthwhile to take a rental car. From Malaga you drive on the N-340 always direction Cadiz and from Algeciraz it is then half an hour to Tarifa. From Jerez airport take the A4 direction Algeciraz / Cadiz. Later you follow the E5 / N-340 towards Algeciraz and reach Tarifa after about 100km. In Tarifa itself there are many free parking spaces both centrally and on the coast.
In Tarifa there are mostly sandy beach with few stony places. The two main spots for kite and windsurfers there are Valdevaqueros Beach and Los Lances Beach. To build the material is enough space at both spots. Mainly you will find there a shallow water area with chopper waves. Also you will find a few meters from the spot a parking lot on which you can ask both by car and with a bus. Especially in the high season, because of the many bathers, you have to pay attention to the compliance of the kite zones. In the event of a violation, a fine is sometimes pronounced. In the off-season this is often not seen too tight.
In Tarifa there are two important winds: the Levant and the Poniente. The Levant is an easterly wind that pulls warm and dry over the land. This wind is very strong and very gusty, as it usually pulls over land. The most important thing about Levante is that he is off-shore. Therefore, it is important for Levante to choose the right kite spot and to have already reached an advanced skill level. The Poniente is a western wind and comes over the water. He is very consistent but also cooler. Another difference to Levante is that the Poniente is not that strong but also brings the waves to Tarifa. The warmest is in the main season from June to August, however, also the fullest.
The main part of accommodation in Tarifa are holiday apartments and holiday homes. There is a large selection of beachfront properties but also more centrally located. Since these are mainly rented privately you will find the largest selection on platforms such as Airbnb. Especially in the off-season, it is also easily possible to reach one of the numerous parking lots by bus or mobile home. There you can stay for free, but there is a lack of sanitary facilities. Occasionally there are campsites along the beach promenade such as Camping Rio Jara.
Tarifa offers the highest density of kite schools and kite shops around the world. Due to the high wind probability over the whole year, many professional kite surfers like Alex Pastor or Gisela Pulido have settled in Tarifa. These not only offer their own kiteshop but also have a kite school on offer. Kitesurfing learn directly from the pros!
Since the wind is often offshore at Poniente at the main spots, suitable spot alternatives are needed on these days. The good thing about Tarifa is that they are very close together and can be reached by car in a short time. Who is on wave should go to Arte Vida at Poniente. This spot is not suitable for beginners. Due to the many bathers, this spot is closed in the high season for kite surfers. A spot where both beginners and advanced feel comfortable is Bolonia. The special feature of this spot is that there is a huge parking lot for PWK and buses directly at the spot. However, here too, kitesurfing is not allowed in the main season. During the winter months good days can be enjoyed on a few days.
What to do in case of no wind or when the body needs a sports break? Fehmarn offers suitable business alternatives for such cases. Although the city is very small, it has a really nice downtown area. The streets are winding and narrow, which can bring you a few beautiful shots. There are a lot of bars with really good cocktails. So you can find many restaurants for any food. If you like or want to try tapas we can recommend Bar El Frances. As usual at Kite locations where you have kiteschools so you can rent SUP's for cheap money. It is really fun to ride small waves at the beach!
